8 Practical Safety Tips

📱
Use Uber or DiDi — avoid hailing taxis on the street. Both apps are widely available and safer for visitors.
⚠️
Scopolamine (burundanga) is a real risk — never accept drinks or food from strangers, especially on dating apps or in nightlife settings.
💳
Use ATMs inside banks or malls during daylight hours. Use a travel card with no foreign transaction fees.
📍
Stay in tourist-friendly neighborhoods — El Poblado and Laureles (Medellín), Getsemaní (Cartagena), La Candelaria area (Bogotá).
🌙
Flash kidnapping exists — keep a "decoy wallet" with a small amount of cash. Keep your phone out of sight in crowded areas.
🗺️
Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) — looking lost with your phone out makes you a target.

Common Questions

Everything You Need to Know

Honest answers to the questions every Colombia traveler asks.

Yes — with smart precautions. Colombia has transformed dramatically over the past 25 years. Medellín's homicide rate dropped 97% from its 1991 peak and is now lower than cities like New Orleans and Detroit. Tourist areas in major cities are well-monitored. The main risks for visitors are petty theft, scopolamine (avoid drinks from strangers in nightlife settings), and opportunistic scams. The U.S. State Department rates most of Colombia at Level 2 (Exercise Normal Precautions), the same rating as France and Germany. Millions visit safely every year.
U.S., Canadian, UK, EU, and Australian citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays. You'll receive a tourist stamp on arrival allowing 90 days, extendable to 180 days per calendar year. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date. You may also be asked to show proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Colombia's digital nomad visa (launched 2023) allows up to 2 years for remote workers earning ~$1,100+/month.
Colombia has two dry seasons: December–March and June–August. Both are excellent for travel. Medellín enjoys spring-like weather year-round (averaging 22°C/72°F) due to its elevation. The Caribbean coast (Cartagena, Tayrona) is best December–April. The Amazon is best visited June–November when water levels are higher. The Feria de las Flores in Medellín (August) and Christmas Alumbrados (December) are major highlights worth planning around.
Colombia is outstanding value. Budget travelers can get by on $30–50/day (hostel dorms, local restaurants, free tours). Mid-range travelers spend $60–120/day (private hotels, tour experiences, restaurants). Colombia is roughly 54% cheaper than Costa Rica and 82% cheaper than the Dominican Republic for comparable quality. Flights from the U.S. East Coast run $200–500 round trip. The weak Colombian peso means your dollar goes significantly further than a few years ago.
Both are excellent starting points and they offer very different experiences. Medellín is the better all-around choice for first-timers — comfortable climate, excellent infrastructure, world-class food scene, incredible day trips (Guatapé, coffee country), and a fascinating urban transformation story. It's also a great base for digital nomads. Cartagena is the classic Caribbean Colombia experience — colonial architecture, warm beaches, and vibrant nightlife. Many travelers combine both on a 10–14 day trip. See our Medellín vs Cartagena comparison guide →
